“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” ― Oscar Wilde
I don’t know about you, but I find it deeply reassuring when I remind myself that Every. Single. Last. One. Of. Us is screwing up in one way or another.
At what point did we start believing it was our job to reach a state of perfection in our lives? When did we buy into the myth that if we worked really hard, we would one day “make it” and simply bask in the glory of having done everything according to plan? How is it possible that we continue to hold these impossible expectations of ourselves and even worse…of one another?
The truth is, we humans are MESSY. Always have been, always will.
Where is the hope, then? Where is the beauty?
It’s right here in the gutter, baby. Look around. We’re all here…screwing it up one way or another…together. Every. Single.Last.One.Of.Us. Reach out and know you are not alone here. It’s a big old mess of pain and bliss and sadness and glory, but we’re all down here together.
Welcome to your life. You are exactly on time, on purpose. It’s okay to not have the answers. It’s okay to struggle at any point in your life.
So what’s the point? Is this depressing and morbid news?
No…look up! Look up and see the stars. We have so much to enjoy and appreciate on this strange and gorgeous ride. And look around, look left and right and see one another. We get to do this together! We are so much more alike than we are different…and while we will never one day “make it”, we can thoroughly enjoy the adventure all the same. Even better, we get to do this with LOVE. So go big on love and light on perfection…and it’s all gonna be okay.
See you in the gutter!
